Welcome to the Website For the Welwyn Garden City Games Club (WGCGC)

WGCGC is a non-profit-making club that exists to provide a safe, friendly and secure environment for anyone in the Welwyn Garden City and surrounding area to play games including Roleplaying, Tabletop, Boardgame, Card Games etc..

The games we are currently playing are listed on the games page , and you will also find a list of the official club dates on the calendar page .

The WGCGC meet in the Backhouse Room (see venue page for more details) on a weekly basis.

New Members

We will welcome new members to the club at any meeting. If you have any questions or concerns which have not been answered on this website, would like to introduce yourself or find out anything more, please contact us by email .

We also now have an online forum here.

Membership Fees

We have a membership fee which is used to cover venue hire. The fee depends on how many members turn up but is less than £ 3 per session.

Discrimination Policy

As we play games which sometimes cover adult themes and are aiming to cater for mature gamers, the club is only open to adults (18+). The club welcomes more mature players- indeed our average age is probably currently around the mid thirties.

No form of racial, sexual, religious, disability-based or other harassment or discrimination will be tolerated by the club. Penalties for such action may include banning from certain club activities or expulsion from the club.

What is a Role-Playing Game?

A role-playing game (RPG; often roleplaying game) is a game in which the participants assume the roles of fictional characters. Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, and the actions succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines. Within the rules, players have the freedom to improvise; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the game.

Most role-playing games are conducted like radio drama: only the spoken component is acted. One player, the game master (GM), creates a setting in which the other players play the role of a single character. The GM describes the game world and its inhabitants; the other players describe the intended actions of their characters, and the GM describes the outcomes. Some outcomes are determined by the game system, and some are chosen by the GM.

What do I need?

All you really need is a good sense of fun, some imagination and enthusiasm. A selection of polyhedral dice is useful, but we usually have more than enough to go around, and pen and paper sometimes come in handy. If you want to run any games then you will need to invest in some rulebooks. Savage Worlds is a good game to start with- for more details see the games page.
